Wagaya Tapas | Newtown

Wagaya’s opened in Newtown and this marks the 4th I believe Japanese eatery on King Street Newtown. Look for what is now cafe shenkin and the entrance is on the muralled wall and its just up a short flight of stairs. Look for the Holysheet mural and its opposite that on Church street.

Fitout is yellow pine furniture, dark woods and black leather – there is a rope netting slung from the ceiling as deco. Its not bad in a mod japanese eatery sort of way. If you’re seated near the window, you can look out on bustling king street. Booths on the right. Fits about 6 but its gonna be tight!

Wagay’s touch interface makes for easy ordering. We’re looking at the dessert page and I could use a green tea parfait now. These just look so good.

Opening: Newtown Roll. $5 (its normally $16) we ordered heaps with our asahi. Hey, its the opening specials and the lads were hungry.

Salmon + Tuna Rolls. $15ish. Not bad. Friend said the tuna was like really pinky.

More Tuna+ Salmon in a california roll.

Salmon Sushi. $15 or so.

Deep Fried Lotus Root Salad Quite good. Crunchy and made for a nice contrast.

So touch sushi comes to Newtown and its a good one. Wagaya’s Newtwon sits nicely at the classier end with Iziya and the sushi train near the station. The food was quite good and it all came quickly (as did the asahis). Didn’t end up trying dessert but the meal was pleasant.
